How Two Docs & a Laptop Went Virtual
It Was All A Dream
The annual CiDA meeting began in 2003 and was co-founded by two physicians who envisioned ways to deliver better care for patients with kidney failure. Ingemar Davidson MD, PhD, (a transplant surgeon) and Bart Dolmatch MD, FSIR, (an interventional radiologist), have co-directed this event now in it's 17th year.
The Times They Are A-Changin'
Since its inception, the CiDA meeting has grown in popularity and continues to evolve with the changing times. For the past 16 years, the meeting was delivered in-person at an annual conference. But in spring of 2020, as we started to plan for the upcoming fall 2020 CiDA meeting, pandemic news hit leading to mandates for social distancing as well as restrictions on gatherings and travel.
Meetings related to dialysis access, such as VASA, Charing Cross, European Vascular Conference, are being postponed, cancelled, or moved to an online format. Many other medical meetings, including GEST, CIRSE, TCT-CRF, ASN Renal Week, and the RSNA meeting have announced that they will take their content to a web-based virtual program format.
Introducing the PodCase
What does this mean for CiDA? CiDA is committed to holding our annual meeting in 2020. It will take the form of an online, one hour PodCase - delivered weekly for 4+ weeks that remain controversial, fun, engaging, relevant and worth your time. Access will be free, and the PodCases will be archived for later viewing.
Documenting Our Journey
And here’s what you may find really interesting. In a series of upcoming social media posts, we will unfold the story of how we are migrating from an on-the-ground meeting to a virtual one. Step behind the scenes with CiDA.
No one is else is telling this story – only CiDA! Join us as we navigate exactly how we are doing this transition. What is the best broadcast platform? When and how long should the virtual session be held? What is the best meeting format? What is an optimal social media approach, and how can it be developed? How will “attendees” interact with the faculty – and each other? How can the meeting obtain adequate funding, and how will sponsors adapt and react? Can continuing medical education credit be incorporated into the meeting?
CiDA will share our experiences as we address these questions, and many more. Follow our successes and challenges as we morph to a virtual meeting.We will tell all.
